LISTEN 1. Who is taking meeting minutes/notes ? 2. Have potential distractions been eliminated (can be particularly important in a virtual meeting)? 3. Are you asking questions that have already been answered? 4. Are you demonstrating active listening skills? PERSIST 1. Did each of your questions get answered? 2. Do you need to ask a question again, or consider asking it in another way? 3. Is there any additional information you need? 4. Will you need to schedule a follow - up meeting ? STAY OBJECTIVE 1. Are you focusing on the facts and answers provided, and avoiding any pre-conceived notions? 2. Are you practicing professional skepticism – neither assuming management is not telling the truth, nor is being 100% honest? Trust, but verify. 3. Are you ignoring the personality of management, but rather focusing on responses to questions? DON’T ASSUME 1. Are you verifying management’s responses when necessary? 2. Are you obtaining complete answers from management, and avoiding “filling in the blanks” with your questions? 3. If you are not receiving complete answers, consider other keys to fact finding – are you talking with the right person? Do you need to persist and ask the question again, or another way? DON’T GET OVERWHELMED 1. Have you been able to separate out what is relevant versus what is not? 2. Are you focusing on root causes in your analysis and questioning? 3. What other examiners can provide perspective or assistance in completing your review?
