IT Examiner School

Disclaimer From this point on, this module is moving away from the specific guidance of the FFIEC, since newer development formats such as Agile Development and DevOps (which we will discuss here) are not a perfect fit in the world of SDLC. How can we deal with this problem until specific guidance comes along?

Development Types Waterfall • Waterfall processing is the name for the processing style that was typical in the mainframe world. • It takes its name from the analogy of a river going from a set point, running through a change (the waterfall) and arriving at an end point. • It’s a single process that runs from the beginning to the end.

Agile • Agile processing is totally different from Waterfall • It’s not addressed in FFIEC handbook – the word ‘agile’ doesn’t even appear in the handbook! • It’s not a natural fit for SDLC, which is geared to structure and repeatability • Agile development can be very prone to ‘scope creep
