Business Requirements Document The business requirements document (‘BRD’) is, in almost every SDLC, the controlling document for a project. It documents: • all of the goals of the project • all of the details of the final product • all of the agreements that have been made along the way. It typically includes the project’s budget, and details of how much of a variation – in either dollars or time – is allowed in that budget without the project needing to be reapproved.

Business Requirements Document • Careful management of the BRD is one of the vital skills needed in the job. • Once the BRD has been completed and signed off by the stake ‐ holders, it becomes a tool for the PM. • “If it isn’t in the BRD as a requirement, it isn’t getting done!” is a common statement in project status meetings.
