Hot and Cold Aisles, Part 2 • The raised floor environment found in large data centers allows the cold air to be pumped under the floor, and to be forced up into the equipment racks. • To maximize the impact of that arrangement, racks can be arranged so that the floor plan has hot and cold aisles. • In general the fronts of the racks face onto a cold aisle, while the rear of the racks (which are open to vent the heat) face hot aisles. • The hot aisles are specially vented over to hot air returns.
