Use design sprints with Rapid Prototyping A design sprint brings a small group of people together for a few days or weeks to focus on solving a problem or designing a new process, product, or policy. The goal is to identify ideas to solve a tough problem, create a low-fidelity prototype, and test it with a real user. All in a short period of total focus. A variety of techniques can be used to work quickly (see resources). Good when you want to: Make fast progress on a problem that involves many departments Get the full attention of people who have a lot of items competing for their time Alternative approach: Can be done virtually, see Remote Design Sprint guide below. Resources Establish incubators or accelerators There are many ways to implement this tool, but the overall purpose is to establish a formal program to bring innovators in and support them while they develop and test out an idea. In the Federal government, several agencies have developed programs that provide funding and assistance to develop, test, and scale creative ideas from government employees or citizens (see resources). At the smallest scale, you can establish an internal program with some set aside funding and training resources or staff that help employees take an idea and test it out through a prototype or pilot. Good when: Your employees have ideas, but you need funding and assistance in testing them out. You have limited funds to spend on innovation, and you want to make sure you fund the most promising projects.
