John J. Schroeder Regional Director, Midwest Region
Since April of 2016, John has been serving as Regional Director for the CFPB’s Midwest Region. In this role he directs the examination, supervision, administrative and support functions for the Region. John also ensures the Region meets agency goals designed to ensure depository financial institutions and non-depository consumer financial services companies (“regulated
entities”) comply with applicable Federal consumer financial laws. Prior to his appointment, John had served as Acting Regional Director since September 2015. He previously served as both Assistant Regional Director and as a Field Manager. In these capacities he led teams of examiners, and coordinated supervisory efforts relative to a portfolio of entities, in a manner that promotes a balanced approach to financial regulation. Immediately prior to joining the CFPB, John served the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions (“IDFI”) for 23 years, most recently as General Counsel and Deputy Director of Consumer Credit. He directed legal efforts relative to supervision, legislation, litigation, and personnel matters for the IDFI, serving as a resource to agency management and its Board. As Deputy Director for Consumer Credit, he led the division’s regulatory work related to mortgage lenders, consumer lenders, payday lenders, pawn brokers, check cashers, money transmitters, and debt management companies. Prior to assuming the roles of General Counsel and Deputy Director, John served in a variety of roles with the IDFI, including Bank Examiner, Senior Bank Analyst, Review Examiner, and Supervisor of Administration. In addition to his regulatory experience, John worked in the retail management area within Bank One, and also as an Associate in Corporate Finance with Raffensperger Hughes and Company, a regional investment bank formerly headquartered in Indianapolis. John earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance with a minor in Economics from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, and graduated magna cum laude from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law.
